Dads of today are something special

Fathers, step-fathers, grandfathers and uncles influence and model another set of values for our children.

“Any man can be a Father but it takes someone special to be a dad.” — Anne Geddes

We are so fortunate to live in an era that encourages dads to be so hands-on. I look at everything my husband does with our daughters from driving them to tournaments, doing homework with them and making breakfast on the weekends.

I think of my grandparents telling stories about dads waiting outside during the birth of their child or sharing how unusual it was for dads to change a diaper let alone spend any time in the kitchen. Our grandmothers and some of our mothers really missed out on so many experiences that should have been shared.

My husband was with me every step of the way through each pregnancy and delivery holding my hand. And now with teens, he helps with homework, carpools and sports.

Fathers, step-fathers, grandfathers and uncles influence and model another set of values for our children. Growing up with three brothers, I always assumed their father-son relationship was more important than my father-daughter relationship. I did not truly understand how influential dads are in their daughters lives until I had my own daughters.

My husband and I have different parenting styles and I watch our children benefit from those differences with me being the nurturer and him being more matter-of-fact. I am the organizer and he is more relaxed. I am the talker and he is the quieter one. I am protective and he creates adventure and risk. We have found a way to blend our styles and I think our daughters benefit from watching us learn from each other and work as a team.

I know that my daughters have been fortunate to be raised by a man with integrity and strong values. They know their dad can make them tasty dinners, comfort them when they’re sad, help with math and science homework, and even discuss the topic of boys. When they are ready to start dating, my hope is that they will look for these same qualities.

HAPPY FATHER’s DAY to every man out there making a difference in a child’s life!
