What to Bring When Bringing Home Baby

Packing your hospital bag is a fun, momentous part of getting ready for a new baby. As a second time mom, here’s what I’ll be including this time around.

Nightgown, robe, slippers… anything that will make you feel warm, comfortable, and human. Nightgowns are great because they allow the nurses to check you easily, and a robe on top will keep you warm.

Nursing pillow. It was nice to have my own nursing pillow at the hospital so that I could get used to using it. Again, having one with a pretty or fun pattern will brighten up your hospital stay.

Make-up bag: keep it simple, but remember that you’ll have a lot of visitors and be taking a lot of pictures. Tinted moisturizer, colored lip balm, mascara, and your gorgeous new mama glow will make you look so pretty you’ll practically forget that you’re wearing giant mesh underwear.

Ipad, books, magazines, dvds. Newborns sleep a lot, so take advantage of staying in bed and bring something to relax with! This is your time to rest and recover.

Lanolin, nursing pads, nursing bra, nursing cover. Nursing can be tricky at first. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. I asked everyone to watch me nurse (doctor, nurses, even the guy who brought my meals. Ok, maybe just kidding on that last one). Hospitals are usually well staffed with lactation consultants and knowledgeable nurses to answer your breastfeeding questions. Treat yourself well during this time; lanolin and nursing pads can make the experience more comfortable.

Present from the new baby. We’ll have a small present “from the new baby” for our son. We want to help make him feel part of the process!

Gifts for the nurses. I have never loved strangers so much as the nurses who cared for us in the hospital. This time I’m showing my appreciation by bringing small gifts with us.

Going home outfits. One for you and one for baby. Pick something comfortable and loose!
